In 2002, Steve Lewis was in the middle of a major life transition. After stepping away from the corporate world and without a job at the time, he decided to do something meaningful… take his family on a summer road trip out west.
The original plan was to borrow a camper from a relative and travel for the season. Instead, the family purchased a 32-foot pull-behind travel trailer, hooked it up to an existing truck, and headed out.
Over the next seven weeks, they logged 6,500 miles, visited seven national parks, and experienced firsthand what RV travel was all about- freedom, flexibility, and unforgettable family memories.
As Steve traveled across the country, one thing became impossible to ignore: RVs were everywhere. Families, couples, retirees, and people from all walks of life were using RVs to explore the country on their own schedule.
By the time the family returned home, Steve knew his next chapter. In 2003, he officially entered the RV industry, and Lightnin RV was born.

Do you need a special license to drive an RV?
Steve Lewis:
“No, you do not need a special license to drive one of our rental RVs. Your standard driver’s license is all that’s required.”
Do I need special insurance to rent an RV?
Steve Lewis:
“In many cases, your personal auto insurance already covers RV rentals. If it doesn’t, we offer an optional damage waiver right here at our location… similar to what you’d see when renting a car, so you’re covered either way.”
Can I tow a camper with my SUV?
Steve Lewis:
“Yes, in some cases. We make this easy by listing tow ratings on our website. You can enter your vehicle’s make and model to see what it can safely tow. We also list the weight of every travel trailer we rent, so you can choose the right camper based on both your vehicle and how many beds you need.”
Do you have to be 25 years old to rent an RV?
Steve Lewis:
“Yes. Our insurance requires that renters be at least 25 years old, so we’re unable to rent to anyone younger than that.”

“Absolutely. A lot of our renters are first-timers. We provide hands-on training before you leave, walking you through everything—from the kitchen and bathroom to hookups and basic operation—so you feel comfortable and confident once you’re on the road.”
